“What we want is a local museum.” Arthur Hollick, December 10, 1881

To celebrate the Staten Island Museum’s 140th year, Museum collections staff have selected 140 objects that showcase the Museum’s extensive collections and what they can tell us about our past and present, regional art, and our local environment. The Museum began as the Natural Science Association of Staten Island with a mission “to collect and preserve objects of natural science and antiquity, with special reference to local matters, and to diffuse direct knowledge in regard to the same.”  Today the Staten Island Museum is New York City’s only remaining cultural institution with collections that span natural science, history, and art.

140 Objects has been made possible with generous support provided by the Staten Island Foundation.
