SUMMARY:Family History Month Workshop 1: Intro to Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:Free with museum admission. \nRegistration is recommended. \nKick off Family History month and hear about SIM’s ACEGen Initiative by joining the Staten Island Museum Collections Team and the Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS)! In this introductory workshop\, guests will examine the variety of records and documents critical for genealogical research. Invaluable information can be gleaned from church records\, land grants\, cemetery records\, and much more. Learn from professional genealogists Debbie-Ann Paige and Robin Semple about the approach they take to family history research. \nThis program is part of the museum’s Access Collaboration and Equity in Genealogy Initiative (ACEGen). ACEGen endeavors to document and make publicly accessible records from communities that have been underrepresented in historical institutional collecting. ACEGen fosters collaboration between repositories\, organizations\, and the public to improve access and equity in Staten Island’s family history records. These programs are supported by the New York Community Trust and the Altman Foundation.
