Ornithology

The ornithological collection contains over 3,000 specimens of taxidermy birds, study skins, skeletons, eggs and nests. Most of the specimens are from Staten Island and the northeastern United States. It is an historic collection, containing extinct and vanishing species such as the passenger pigeon, Carolina parakeet and ivory-billed woodpecker. Noteworthy collectors represented include co-founders Arthur Hollick and William T. Davis, noted ornithologist James P. Chapin and former Curator of Science Mathilde P. Weingartner.
