Geology

The geology collections contain over 7,000 specimens of rocks, minerals, and fossils from world-wide localities. Important sub-collections include:

Staten Island Geology:
A comprehensive collection of over 1,000 specimens of local rocks and minerals.

Minerals:
A collection of over 3,000 specimens, many from no longer existing mining localities.

Zabinski Collection of microminerals:
This collection of over 3,200 micromounts from world-wide localities was assembled between the period 1950s-1980s. Micromounts are small crystallized mineral specimens, permanently mounted in boxes, for viewing under a microscope. This collection was created by Walter Zabinski, whose first inspiration for mineralogy stemmed from bringing a rock to be identified to the Staten Island museum.
