Gypsy Cart with Donkey and Two Dogs

Felix Hilaire Buhot (1847 - 1898) was a French printmaker who was one of the most successful printmakers of the late 19th Century.  After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Buhot made a living decorating fans and illustrating music score covers, which piqued his interest in printmaking.  Buhot's first etchings appeared in 1873, and his work became famous during a visit to London in 1879.  His works were influenced by Japanese printmakers, and he became known as a master of shadow and light.
