Adriaen Van Ostade was baptized in Haarlem, and spent most of his life there. Little is known of his training, except that he studied under Frans Hals. Ostade worked with his contemporaries, Jan van der Meer and Jacob van Ruisdael.Before 1640, Ostade painted many lively scenes of peasants in drink and dance. His finest work was done between 1650 and 1670, in which he achieved great delicacy and finesse in color and lighting. Ostade worked in oil, but also did drawings which he filled with colored wash and made about fifty engravings. He became a member of the Haarlem Painters Guild in 1634, served as a guild officer in 1646 and 1661. In 1662 he was made its dean.
